A bright smile isn’t just about looking good, it’s one of the first things people notice about you. We all want that perfect smile, and teeth whitening has become popular because of it. With so many options out there, it’s easy to grab a DIY kit from the store. But before you do, let’s talk about why going the professional route can give you better results, more safety, and a smile that really lasts.
First, let's take a look at what causes teeth to lose their luster. Everyday habits like drinking coffee, tea, or red wine, as well as smoking, can lead to stubborn stains on your teeth. Even with the best oral hygiene, these stains can become deeply embedded, making it challenging to maintain that bright smile. Aging also plays a role, as the enamel on our teeth gradually wears down, revealing the yellowish dentin underneath.
Teeth whitening works by using bleaching agents, typically hydrogen peroxide, to break down these stains and brighten your teeth. But not all whitening methods are created equal.
DIY whitening kits are widely available, and it's easy to see why they're appealing. They’re affordable, convenient, and you can use them in the comfort of your home. However, as the saying goes, "You get what you pay for."
The Pros:
Accessibility: You can find these kits almost anywhere, from your local pharmacy to Amazon.
Affordability: They’re often less expensive upfront compared to professional treatments.
Convenience: You can whiten your teeth on your schedule.
The Cons:
Inconsistent Results: Because these kits are one-size-fits-all, the results can vary widely. Some people may see a nice improvement, while others may notice little to no change.
Potential Risks: Without professional supervision, you risk applying the bleaching agent unevenly, which can lead to patchy results or gum irritation.
Limited Potency: Over-the-counter products contain a lower concentration of whitening agents, meaning they may not be strong enough to tackle deeper stains.
When it comes to achieving a truly bright smile, professional teeth whitening generally achieves superior results compared to DIY kits. Here’s why:
Customized Treatment Plans:
Professional whitening isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. We will assess your teeth and create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your unique needs. This ensures that the whitening is even and the results are consistent. Dr. John Lewis and Dr. Paul Lewis will also let you know if you are a good candidate for teeth whitening.
Advanced Whitening Techniques:
Our office uses advanced techniques that aren’t available in over-the-counter products. These include high-concentration whitening gels. The result? A brighter smile in a shorter amount of time.
Expert Supervision:
One of the biggest advantages of professional whitening is the expert care you receive from us. Our Dentists monitor the entire process, ensuring your teeth and gums are protected. They can also manage any sensitivity that might occur during or after the treatment, something that’s hard to do with a DIY kit. We will also let you be aware if you have fillings on your front teeth because whitening kits will not lighten fillings or porcelain crowns.
Longer-Lasting Results:
Professional treatments are more potent, which means the results are not only more dramatic but also longer-lasting. You’ll enjoy your bright smile for months, or even years, depending on your lifestyle and dental care habits. Remember that coffee, wine, and tea are the big three that stain your teeth.
If you’re considering whitening your teeth, it’s essential to choose the right option for your needs. Start by scheduling a whitening consultation with us. During this visit, Dr. John Lewis or Dr. Paul Lewis will evaluate your teeth and discuss your goals to determine the best approach for you.
There are a couple of professional whitening options available at our office:
In-Office Whitening: This is the fastest way to achieve significant results. We apply a gum barrier and then place high-concentration gel to your teeth.
Take-Home Whitening Kits: We have two options in our office:
Option 1: We have take-home trays that are already pre-filled. They’re called GO trays. There are 10 trays for each arch, so 20 trays in total.
Option 2: This is split into two appointments. The first appointment will involve scanning your teeth. This helps us create your custom bleaching trays.
The second appointment we seat your trays and make sure everything fits well. We will send you off with powerful whitening gel syringes and go over how to use them. They contain a higher concentration of whitening agents than over-the-counter kits, offering professional results from the comfort of your home.
When it comes to teeth whitening, professional treatments generally have better results than DIY kits. From customized care to longer-lasting results, the benefits of trusting your smile to a professional are clear. If you’re ready to brighten your smile and boost your confidence, consider scheduling a consultation with us today. After all, your smile deserves the best care possible!
